Are you interested in Buddhism but don't know where to start? Have you heard words like dharma and karma and samsara thrown around and wondered what they meant or why they mattered? Do you want to get a quick overview of Buddhism without making a long-term commitment?

Then…we have just the program for you. In five short classes, we introduce you to the major terms and concepts of Buddhism - a fast tour of the basics to enable you to take the next steps if you want more.

In five classes we provide a broad, simple overview of these and other key aspects of Buddhism and our practice. There is no required reading, no homework and no quizzes! There is, however, a suggested reading list for those who want to read more. Topics covered include:

  • The Four Noble Truths
  • Different kinds of Buddhism: Theravadan, Mahayana, Vajrayana, etc.
  • Buddha's teachings in a gradual form for the practice of one individual...where to start, what next, etc.
  • A brief introduction to meditation

In keeping with our tradition, these classes are offered on a donation basis. No pre-registration is needed.

This course is led by Karen Mastroianni.

Welcome home, Geshe Gelek!

In addition to our usual Sunday morning teachings, we will all have an opportunity to welcome Geshe-la back from his break by offering a kata - the traditional long silk scarf used in Tibet as an offering. It's very auspicious to welcome our teacher back with an offering. This creates the karmic cause to meet teachers again. Because this is an offering, it is best to bring your own kata to offer Geshe-la. We will also have katas available to borrow. Students are also welcome to offer a card or make a financial offering in an envelope.

Our Sunday morning teachings are a vibrant, interactive experience where we explore applying the methods of Buddhism to the nitty-gritty of daily life.  With the guidance of one of our resident teachers, Geshe Gelek Chodha or Geshe Palden Sangpo, we discuss the complications that make us unhappy, and how the tools of Buddhism sheds new light on our thoughts and emotions. In this process we discover how to steer our minds toward happiness.

the session. The teachings and prayers are in English.

Geshe-la welcomes questions and frequently will ask for questions from us, so that he can tailor his teachings to our needs.  We collect questions at any time at the Center (there’s a box on the desk just inside the door for them), and you can also submit questions online.

Sunday is a great time for a first visit to Kadampa Center – students at every level come, from newcomers to practitioners with 30+ years of experience, and it's a great opportunity to meet others and start making new friends.

We offer a full range of children's programs on Sundays. Children are invited to sit on the blue cushions at the front of the gompa, and then depart to their classes after opening prayers. Any child who wishes to is welcome to remain in the gompa for the teachings.

On many Sundays, we also host other events, such as the Newcomer Orientation, New Member Orientation, pujas, and more. Special events for holy days, special practices, or exhibits and visiting teachers are also occasionally held on Sundays, so for all these events please check the calendar for more information and specific times.

Kadampa Center is happy to welcome Venerable Amy Miller back for a weekend workshop on Awakening the Fully Open Heart!

“Cherishing others more than oneself” rests as the crux of the Buddhist path and seems beneficial in theory, but how do we truly cultivate that mindset? This class presents the two main methods for developing bodhichitta, the enlightened attitude, and introduces meditations on tonglen and equanimity to begin the process of fully opening our hearts. In this weekend workshop,

Ven. Amy will guide our exploration of how to expand our hearts to see everyone around us as more precious than ourselves.

We encourage folks to bring a bag lunch on Saturday and Sunday, so we can keep our momentum by discussing the morning's teachings over lunch -- and get better acquainted in the process!

As always, these Dharma teachings will be offered with no entrance fee. However, there are extensive costs involved in bringing a visiting teacher from another city, including travel and food.  A great way to support the teachings is through sponsorship!

We will have our usual Sunday morning Dharma teaching and Children's Program, with Venerable Amy teaching.

Be part of making Venerable Amy's visit a success!

All our programs depend on the kind offerings of karma yoga -- volunteer work -- of our members and friends. We make our visiting teachers and students welcome by having greeters at the door, offering water bowls on the altar, and having an assistant to bring a beverage to the teacher and make sure the gompa is neat and orderly.  You can sign up for any of these jobs here.

Learn what tantra is, how it works, and why it is a powerful form of practice. Get a broad overview of the four classes of tantra and learn to practice simple Kriya tantric methods. Learn to integrate tantra with lam-rim meditation for optimal results.

Introduction to Tantra is part of a two-year series of classes called Discovering Buddhism. In this course we explore 13 essential topics in Buddhism, from Meditation to Karma to Death and Rebirth, with much, much more! This is an excellent course of study for those who have the very basics and wish to start going a little deeper into Buddhist philosophy.

DB was developed by our affiliate organization, the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition, and is taught at Kadampa Center by senior lay students with many years of study and practice. Students who take the course together tend to develop great friendships with their Dharma buddies!

In keeping with our long-standing tradition, Kadampa Center does not charge a fee for any Dharma course. These teachings are too precious to allow money to be an obstacle for anyone to hear them!  We do, of course, have expenses to offer the course, so we happily welcome any heart-felt donations.  No pre-registration is required.
