December collection for Little Sparrows Orphanage

In December, we turn our thoughts to those in need around the world by
collecting donations for the Little Sparrows Orphanage in Peru. These items will be hand carried directly to the Orphanage in January in 2 suitcases, so need to be small in size. Here are suggestions:

Children's over-the-counter medicines: Tylenol, stomach remedies, antibiotic ointments, etc.

Personal hygiene items: bar soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, etc.

Other (new or like-new): CLOTH diapers, children's shoes, socks, underwear

Los Gorriones (Little Sparrows) is a privately run orphanage in Ayacucho, Peru. Los Gorriones opened its doors to four children in March 2002: a blind girl with cerebral palsy who was found in a
garbage dump among rats, pigs and street dogs; Yaneth and Jose-Luis, twins whose mother died during delivery and whose father is unknown; and Nathalie, abandoned at birth. Today, Los Gorriones houses 32 children, many of them handicapped, in a house designed for 24.

"The Sparrows", as the children of Los Gorriones are fondly referred to, attend school and are involved in many extracurricular activities to normalize their lives as much as possible. This orphanage is their only hope for survival in a desperately poor city that is coping with many problems related to poverty.

Save the Dates!

We expect Lama Zopa Rinpoche to give a 3 year series of teachings on the "Lamp on the Path to Enlightenment" at Kadampa Center starting October, 2009. The 2009 dates are October 1 through October 15th.

This will be a huge program and we expect people from all over the country and likely from outside the country as well to attend. It is a tremendous honor that Rinpoche has chosen Kadampa Center for the site of these important teachings.

Please mark your calendar now and plan to hold those 2 weeks as open as possible. Also, please let others who might be interested know as well.

More details will follow as we have them.
