In response to Kadampa's Center request for a long life prayer for Geshe Gelek, Khen Rinpoche Geshe Lobsang Delek, one of Geshe Gelek's closest teachers, recommended that we recite at least 200,000 Green Tara mantras annually and dedicate them to Geshe Gelek's long life. He said those recitations benefit many other beings as well.
Green Tara is the embodiment of the enlightened activities of the Buddhas. The Sanskrit root tār means to traverse. As such, Green Tara traverses all fears and obstacles. In Tibet, her name is Dolma, meaning 'liberator' or 'she who saves.' Her green color represents action and karma, and her female form represents wisdom - the essential element needed to remove the ignorance that misconstrues reality and is the root of all our suffering. Her right leg is outstretched to leap quickly from her throne to come to the aid of sentient beings.
Green Tara's mantra is recited to help dispel fear, remove hindrances, and bring success in all beneficial endeavors.
